Recce for another Old Gits training run. 31

Another fine day to get out in the saddle.  Out today looking for a decent 30 miler that perhaps the Old Gits could use as a training ride.  Rather than keeping to the Somerset Levels, travelling east out of Weston should provide a bit more challenging countryside.  Banwell, Sanford, Churchill, Wrington, Congresbury and back should do the trick.

On the Prom

A brisk NW wind was the challenge today.  Great for going out, shouldn't be too bad on the return.  Started off at the sea front and noticed the walkers on the beach were well wrapped up.  Nice clear view over to Wales though and the sun was about for most of the ride.  Good decision to wear leggings and an extra layer but not quite cold enough for full gloves.  Winter really is around the corner.

Mother Hen

Unavoidably, some of the roads were trunk roads but there is no avoiding them.  Mid morning in the week shouldn't be a problem though.  Through Sanford and the back lane through Churchill, turned left off the A38 and headed for The Red Beetle Tea Room; which is now the Mother Hen!  There has been a change of ownership although the tea room itself is essentially the same at the moment.  Tea and a piece of shortbread went down very well. The new owner seems very approachable and welcomes cyclists.  You note the bike is resting against a seat.  If the Parish Council agree, the owner has plans for a proper cycle rack (take note Mick) so that bikes can be left more secure. Open 5 days a week, Tuesday to Saturday, I can recommend this tea stop if you are in the area.

Beware

An uneventful trip back to Weston after tea, back from Congresbury on the Strawberry Line to Winscombe, and ran the gauntlet of what is the main road through Banwell.  Finishing off along the cycle path through Bourneville Estate, nearly came a cropper on this fold down metal bollard on the cycle track.  With the  sun nearly directly ahead this was almost invisible.  The council have been notified.

Not a bad route that can be suggested next time they go out.  Covered 31 miles personally but if the meeting point is the Tescos as usual, it should be a 27 mile round trip.  For discussion on Tuesday!
