Wedmore Wander 37

A really nice day today, although a bit of a chill in the westerly breeze.  A shame not to go out today.  Decided to stick mainly on the Somerset Levels after a 50+ miler in the week.  So it was down to Wedmore and back via Mark and East Brent.

Ashton Windmill

Heading towards Wedmore from the A38, just past Chapel Allerton is Ashton Windmill.  This has been on here before but is worth another mention.  This is a medieval mill, used for grinding wheat and beans and originally had canvas sails.  The present structure dates from the 18th century and was restored in 1967.  It is owned by Somerset CC but they are seeking new trustees.  It is a grade 2 listed building.  Chatted with another cyclist there who had stopped for brunch and to enjoy the view across the levels to Devon. He is on the fourth day of the 'end to end' (Lands end to John O'groats).

Totney Drove

Carried on through Wedmore and down Mudgely Hill back to the Levels.  It was the intention to have tea and cake at Sweets cafe but time was running out so diverted along Totney Drove to get to Mark and East Brent.  This has to be one of the best roads to cycle along, especially if the traffic is light which it was this morning (one van). Had to stop and take this photo of the oilseed rape and cow parsley mixture bordering the road.  And, look at that sky.  Out past East Brent and towards Brean, heard a cuckoo in the nearby fields. No mistaking the sound of that bird.

Finished up on just over 37 miles with a weekly total of 156.5.  This tops a previous weekly best by 2.5 miles.  Might have to have a pint tonight to celebrate that.
